Zimmer Bernhard

Bernhard Zimmer (* 1957 in Stuttgart) creates subtly structured paintings that contain diametrically opposed elements - order and chaos, abstraction and representation, boldness and subtlety. His compositions are constructed like reliefs. Grids of translucent rendered surfaces and blocks of illegible text emerge in exciting layers of colour, their surfaces shifting with the light and the position of the viewer.

"Without a compositional centre, without a hierarchy of pictorial parts, the paintings unfold as wholes, clearly revealing the traces of complex layers and overlays of paint, of colour running and wearing away." (Peter Lodermeyer)
